The Broad is Back!

Once upon a time, I wrote a column called A Broad Abroad, a collection of weekly observational essays on wide-ranging topics, all colored by my experiences as an American expatriate. Sometimes I discussed current events, sometimes politics, and other times, I just made some points on the differences or even similarities that I’ve noticed between Americans and the rest of the world.

So how did that all come about? Although I love travel, I never intended to leave America and live abroad, but as they say, life happens. While it’s certainly not a lifestyle for everyone, I’ve mostly enjoyed it, and I’ve learned so much in the process that I felt I should share.

It was 18 years ago that I left the US. That’s a long time. And now I’ve been back for almost six years. And maybe I’m leaving again. I’m trying.

Just who am I? Born to Irish American (mostly) parents in White Plains, NY, lived briefly in Queens then WP, Carmel, Troy, Albany, NYC, Carmel, Hsinchuang (Taiwan), Geneva (Switzerland), Valskog (Sweden), Linköping. Where next?? Not sure yet.
PhD in English Restoration Literature, former reporter, currently a professor and writer, want to be a philanthropist when I grow up. Mother, adopted auntie to hundreds! Cat lover supreme. Polyglot wanna-be. Not one of my gifts.
